Amherst began as a stage stop called The Oaks and Seven Oaks on the Charlottesville-Lynchburg road, becoming the county seat in 1807 when Nelson County split off, with its current courthouse built from homemade Amherst County clay brick after the original 1809 building was torn down in 1872.
