Altavista began in 1907 as Lane's Siding, a railroad town platted by the Lane brothers at the crossing of the Virginian Railway and Southern Railway, renamed Altavista after a family farm following a bungalow hat-toss, and grew so fast it had a machine shop, foundry, and hotel within its first year.
